The Hotel Industry

The most usual kind of accommodation for travellers is the hotel. The hotel provides: lodging, meals and many other services for travelling people. The history of hotel keeping starts in the seventh and eighth century when monasteries first supplied hospitality for strangers. From the ninth and twelfth century the number of travellers grew-up and were built the Inns. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Manor Houses, being large, hospitable places, gave accommodation to travellers. During Elizabeth the First's reign, Posting Houses were created to give hospitality to travellers and horses. The seventeenth century saw an improvement in the roads which enabled more people to travel by coach and Coaching Iinns became well-known and quickly grew in number. At the beginning of the twentieth century were built new hotels and a major development in hotel history occurred with the construction of big, de-luxe hotels. The hotel of today is a highly organised commercial unit, whether it is a small owner-managed hotel or one of a large chain.

Hotel Types

Airport Hotels - These are large, modern hotels, situated near the airport terminal buildings. Clientele mainly consists of airline staff and people travelling by air. A full sound-proofing system in the rooms protects the guests from the noise coming from the airport traffic. A free minibus service to and from the airport is generally provided.

Motels - Motels provide parking facilities for guests' cars, a good restaurant and often a swimming pool. They are located near many large cities.

Resort Hotels - A resort is a place where people go to for recreation. It many offer mountains, lake scenery, the combination of sun and sea. The most popular areas where summer resort hotels are situated are: Jamaica, Hawaii, Florida, etc.

Meals, health clubs, a private beach, entertainment, and sometimes convention facilities are generally included in the price charged.

City Hotels - City hotels are generally located next to shopping areas, museums, art galleries and historical monuments. The services generally offered to the traveller are car park, fitness club, swimming pool, shopping arcade, etc.

Health Spas - Spa hotels are built at spa resorts. Spa hotels offer not only spa facilities with medical equipment and on the spot treatment, but also elegant hospitality in a relaxed atmosphere.

Hotel Chains

A hotel chain consists of a group of hotels belonging to the same large company. The four giant corporations in the hotel field in the early 1970s were Hilton Hotels Corporation, Sheraton Hotels, Intercontinental Hotels, and, in the United Kingdom, Trusthouse Forte, Ltd. Today there are many other important and prominent chain operators including Marriott, Hyatt, Meridien, Best Western, Ramada.
