THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The industrial revolution changed the way goods were made.

Toward the end of the eighteenth century machinery could do the work of several people and mass production became possible.

With the help of machinery and energy, new industries like iron, steel and engineering grew up.

Market towns gave the way to big industrial centres full of people and black chimney. Here condition are extremely bad. Men, women and children worked for long hour and for very low wages.

So the old order broke and two new classes, capital and labour, came into being.

In a few years economic changes trasformed Britain into the world's first industrial power.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

About 7 per cent of the population is educated at private, or indipendent, schools.

The most famous are Eton, Harrow and Rugby.

They are characterized by disciplin, sport and a spartan life style. They are also expensive.

Boys who attend these schools have their future made for them. The, majority of past Prime Ministers and businessmen have public school backgrounds.

THE BIG THREE OF POP MUSIC

I grandi tre della musica pop non sono tre ma dodici. Infatti, i grandi tre sono tre gruppi: i Beatles, i Rolling Stones e i Pink Floyd.

I Beatles erano un gruppo di lavoratori di classe "lads" che viveva a Liverpool. Le loro canzoni non erano protestanti -come era uso nel 1960- ma parlavano di amore e della vita di ogni giorno dei giovani.

Essi promossero il movimento della Forza del Fiore come una firma di protesta non violenta contro le bombe nucleari.

Il nome dei Rolling Stones viene dal proverbio "ROLLING STONES GATHER NO MOSS". Se ti muovi non invecchi. Essi adottarono una attitudine diversa dalla protesta romantica dei Beatles: le canzoni degli Stones, le parole e la musica, adottarono un tono aggressivo intensificato da Mick Jagger che le cantava sul palco nei concerti selvaggi degli Stones.

I Pink Floyd sono di una diversa estrazione sociale. Tutto il gruppo è di musicisti e mischiano referenze da convinzioni proletarie e versi da Shakespeare e altri scrittori. I loro show sono un perfetto miscuglio di effetti speciali (laser, fumo, luci psichedeliche) e musica sofisticata. Dal punto di vista musicale i Pink Floyd rappresentano il meglio nel campo rock.

WHAT'S IN A MEAL

British meals are a little different to Italian meals. They usually have for breakfast cereals and fruits, bread and jam. They never eat biscuits or cakes for breakfast because they consider this bad for the healt.

Sometimes they have the traditional breakfast. It consint of eggs, sausages and bacon.

English people sometimes stop for a cup of coffee. They like big coffee.

I pasti inglesi sono un po' diversi dai cibi italiani. Essi di solito consumano per colazione cereali e frutta, toast o pane e marmellata. Essi non mangiano mai biscotti o dolci per colazione perché lo considerano cattivo per la salute. Qualche volta consumano la colazione tradizionale. Questa è composta da uova, salsicce e pancetta.

La gente inglese qualche volta si ferma per una coppa di caffè. A loro piace lungo.

BASIC STRUCTURE

The nursery school is the first step in the British education but is not compulsory. Compulsory education begins at the age of five. At primary school children learn the "THREE R" and British sistem has become like European System.

Secondary education which begins at the eleven to sixteen, us rather different. When pupils are 16, they can choose different studies. After exame at the age of 18, they can working or go to university college.
