SKYSCRAPERS

The skyscrapers are the key to making a modern American cityscape more recognizable. The first skyscraper was the 'Home Insurance Building', constructed in Chicago in 1885. It was only ten plans high and was used like office. It only became practical to build such high buildings for homes or offices after 1852, when master mechanic Elisha Graves Otis of New York invented the machinery for moving up and down them; this was a very basic version of today's lift. The Otis company still makes lifts today. In the 1995, the Sears Tower was built in Chicago. This was the higher construction in the world until the 1996, when the record has been struck from the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The name skyscraper was born after 1880 and the golden era of skyscraper construction began with New York's Woolworth Building, built in 1913. This was followed by the building of the Chrysler in 1930 and Empire State Building the following year. It took nineteen months to built and for more than 40 years it held the record as the world's tallest building. It lost the record in 1973 when the World Trade Center was constructed in New York. In recent years skyscrapers construction has slowed considerable. Some cities have placed tight limits on the number of new skyscrapers to protect the characteristic landscape of the city. Similar controls are adopted in San Francisco, Boston, Seattle and Washington DC. Land in city centres is too congested and it is impossible to develop horizontally. Even so, many people and organizations would like to have a base in the heart of the city. It is no surprise that developers are looking vertically rather than horizontally. Many engineers and architects are working for the creation of a constructions that have beauty and character at the same time. There are many plans of several new constructions that would be highest in the world, if constructed. No doubt some will be built some day.

GRATTACIELI

I grattacieli sono la chiave che rende una moderna "cityscape" americana più riconoscibile. Il primo grattacielo era the "Home Insurance Building", costruito a Chicago nel 1885. Era alto soltanto dieci piani ed era usato come ufficio. È diventato pratico costruire tali alte costruzioni per abitazioni o uffici soltanto dopo il 1852, quando l'azienda meccanica Elisha Graves Otis di New York, invento` il macchinario per muoversi su e giù di loro; era una versione molto basilare dell'odierno elevatore. La Otis fabbrica ancora gli elevatori oggi. Nel 995, questa era la costruzione più alta nel mondo, ma nel 1996 il record è stato battuto dal World Trade Centre di Kuala Lumpur, Malesia. Il nome grattacielo nato dopo il 1880 e l' era dorata della costruzione del grattacielo comincio` con l'edificio di Woolworth di New York, costruito nel 1913. Segui` l'edificio della Chrysler nel 1930 e l'Empire State Building il seguente anno. Occorsero diciannove mesi per la sua costruzione e per più di 40 anni ha tenuto il record come la costruzione più alta del mondo. Negli ultimi anni la costruzione dei grattacieli e` ritardata considerevolmente. Molte città hanno disposto limiti stretti sul numero di nuovi grattacieli per proteggere il paesaggio caratteristico della città. Controlli simili sono adottati a San Francisco. Boston, Seattle e Washington DC.

Il territorio dei centri urbani cosi` "condensato" che è impossibile svilupparsi orizzontalmente. Molta gente e organizzazioni vorrebbero pero` avere una base nel cuore della città. Non e` una sorpresa quindi che lo sviluppo si sta osservando verticalmente piuttosto che orizzontalmente. Molti architetti e ingegneri stanno lavorando per la creazione di costruzioni che abbiano bellezza e stabilita` allo stesso tempo. Ci sono gia` molti progetti di parecchie nuove costruzioni che sarebbero le più alte al mondo, se costruite. Senza dubbio qualcuna sarà sviluppata un giorno.
